All About Cartomizers

Electronic cigarettes come in several different types these days, and trying to figure out which one best suits your needs can be difficult. Here you will find the answer to some basic questions about cartomizers, and the difference between cartomizers, atomizers, and clearomizers.

What Is an Atomizer? *

The atomizer is what heats the liquid inside the e-cigarette to create the vapor. It is sometimes called a heating element. Atomizers wear out over time, and they stop working properly. If the atomizer isn’t working properly, you won’t get the proper amount of vapor.

What Is a Cartomizer? *

Cartomizers combine the atomizer and the flavor cartridge. This means that the atomizer is replaced each time you replace the cartridge, and this is supposed to keep the performance at peak level.

How Does a Cartomizer Work? *

cartomizer has metal threading on one end so you can screw it into the battery, and it is open on the other end. In the tube you will find a metal wire surrounded by polyfill material, or cotton wicks. Cartomizers are fairly simple to use and inexpensive, making them a good choice for  e-cigarette beginners.

You simply put your e-juice into the tube with the polyfill material. When the atomizer begins to heat, it starts vaporizing the e-juice in the polyfill material. There are a few downsides however. The cartomizer is much more likely than other types of atomizers to retain the flavor of previous e-juices. If you don’t get it properly primed or let the e-juice run too low, you will end up with a burnt taste. Getting a burnt taste can easily be prevented with proper use, and if you like to switch flavors frequently you can always have a cartomizer for each flavor with their low price.

These can also be prefilled, so that all you have to do is take the old one off and put a new one on when you need a refill. This is very convenient, and fairly cost effective. Of course it is also very user friendly. The premade refills usually last for about 100 puffs before needing to be changed. If you are on the go, you can just take an extra cartomizer or two with you. No need to worry about carrying around an e-liquid bottle that may leak in your pocket. You won’t find as big a range of flavors and strengths as the e liquids, but if you value convenience over variety this is a great way to go.

With an unpunched cartomizer, you put the e-juice right into the polyfill material. One advantage of doing this is they are relatively small. These are generally the type that you see that looks like a regular cigarette. There is little possibility of these leaking. The downside is that they only hold so much e-juice, so you will need to add more juice pretty often.  However, some tanks are fragile and can be damaged by certain e-juices, but this type of tank doesn’t have that problem.

Tank Cartomizers *

punched cartomizer has one or two holes, and it is designed to fit inside a tank. You fill the cartomizer tank up with e-juice, and the holes allow it to be soaked up into the polyfill. The biggest advantage of a tank cartomizer is that it can hold much more juice than the tankless version. You can choose different size tanks based on how much e-juice you want them to hold. Of course the more e-juice that it holds the bigger the tank will be.Cartomizers

The biggest issue with the tanks is they have a tendency to leak. It can also be hard to get a consistent flow with the tank, because it has to draw the e-liquid out of the tank and into the polyfill. If the e-liquid gets clogged, it can come out all at once resulting in a mouthful of e-juice. E-juice tastes great in vapor form, but getting a mouthful of it isn’t a great experience.

How to Refill *

If you are replacing the cartomizer

  1. Unscrew it from the battery. Take the cartomizer and throw It away, and open the new one.
  2. Look down the cartomizer. You should see a hole in the middle of the polyfill.
  3. Take your bottle and begin dripping the liquid into the polyfill. Do not get it in the hole, and don’t try to put too much in at once.
  4. Continue slowly dripping in your e-liquid until it comes out of the hole or the bottom.
  5. As the polyfill gets wet the e-juice won’t sink in as fast, and you are getting close to full.
  6. Do not go too fast, because you can get juice where it doesn’t belong and damage your atomizer.
  7. If you do get e-juice where it doesn’t belong (happens to everyone), either blow through it into a trashcan or take a paper towel and wipe out the inside really well.
  8. If you have a tank, place the cartomizer tube into the tank, about ¾ of the way down.
  9. Put your e-juice needle in the hole in the tank, and fill it to 2/3 full.
  10. Put your cartomizer the rest of the way into the tank.
  11. Put on your drip tip and vape away.

If you are just refilling:

  1. Unscrew it from the battery
  2. Follow steps 2-11

If you don’t have a tank:

  1. Follow steps 1-7.
  2. Follow step 11

Flanged and Unflanged *

To add to all the mystery of vaping  (it seems nothing in vaping is simple), you have flanged tanks and unflanged tanks. Flanged tanks are recessed to allow for a flange on the cartomizer. This helps everything stay where it belongs, but isn’t really considered necessary.

An unflanged cartomizer comes in two types. Either a locking tank, which screws in and has a screw to exert pressure on the cartomizer to keep it in place, or a strong o ring. The strong o ring requires you to get it in just right, and you may need to lubricate it first. It is also difficult to get the cartomizer out of the tank, so you will need a special tool ( a cocktail stick or small knife should work fine). All cartomizers come in regular (35mm) and XL (45mm).

The e-cigarette world is all about personal preference, but this can be very confusing and intimidating if you are just starting out. You have to choose between atomizers, cartomizers, and clearomizers. Then you have so many options to choose from once you make that decision. To  complicate matters further, many times the explanation makes you feel like you need a degree in chemistry and physics to understand it. Honestly, it doesn’t have to be that complicated.

If you have never tried vaping, we suggest you can try something that is simple and inexpensive. The prefilled cartomizers are a great choice for a beginner. You simply take it out of the box, screw it on, and vape. When it’s done, you throw it away and get a new one.

Why Don’t Cartomizers Get the Attention They Deserve *

CartomizersThese days you mostly hear about clearomizers and atomizers. Clearomizers are clear tanks with a cotton wick in the center that goes to the atomizer. They have their advantages and disadvantages as well. Atomizers are used for dripping. Dripping is when you drip a few drops of e-juice directly onto the atomizer. While many vapers say that you get the best flavor this way, it is very time consuming to drop e-juice every few puffs.

It Is All about Preference *

If you are new to vaping, the best suggestion for you is to find a local vaping store. These stores are usually happy to let you try their products. Even if the store only has one variety of e-cigarette, you will know if you like that style. Vaping Is a very personal experience. Get it right, and you will love it and wonder why you smoked cigarettes for so long. Get it wrong, and it won’t satisfy you. If it doesn’t satisfy you, then you will go back to your trusted friend, the cigarette, which is not a very favorable conclusion.
